The mission of Jefferson Academy is to help students attain their highest academic and character potential through an academically rigorous, content-rich educational program.
Jefferson Academy envisions a community of parents, teachers, students and educational and business leaders working together to create a learning environment that engenders growth in character, academic achievement, and the love of learning, resulting in responsible, productive citizens.
In the Fall of 1994, a group of parents interested in a more traditional education for their children formed Jefferson Academy Elementary Charter School. In 1996, the Junior High charter was approved and in November of 1998 the Senior High charter was added. Jefferson Academy Schools were originally three separate charters with the Jefferson county R-1 Public Schools. The Elementary and Junior High use the Core Knowledge content guidelines. The Senior High uses a complementing education program called Coordinated Humanities. All of the schools emphasize technology and character development in a rigorous academic environment.
The schools are governed by a board of directors of parents. Charter schools operate with certain waivers from state law in the areas of curriculum, school calendar and personnel. Funding for charter schools comes from a percentage of the money the State Legislature allocates for each student in Colorado.
One of the strengths of Jefferson Academy is the supportive school community and exceptional parental involvement. Each family is expected to volunteer 20 hours at Jefferson Academy, as it has been determined that students do better academically if their parents are involved in their education. The schools offer a variety of social events and extra-curricular activities in order to enhance the school community.
